Birdstones

Picture1.jpg

“Many different types of stone were used for these objet d’art. I intended them to be reminiscent of those found in the Eastern U.S. They are alleged to have been used as atlatyl or flute weights and are often associated with graves. It is suggested that they are shamanic or hunting totems and that some are modeled after passenger pigeons. Popeyed, large eared and footed versions are found. Usually dated Late Archaic to Early Woodland Periods. All are considered abstract portrayals. Many have grooved bases and are drilled. Re-purposing by later people is possible.”
