Planting Trees

350 Vermont is a climate justice group working to plant 100,000 trees in Vermont this spring and fall. They generously offered free trees to Abenaki groups in Vermont and recently gifted Alnôbaiwi 15 bare root saplings. Our partners at the Intervale Conservation Nursery kept them dormant in their cooler for us until this evening, when with the help of our friends and volunteers we planted 2 Sugar Maple, 3 Basswood, 2 Butternut, 2 Tulip, 2 Chinquapin Oak, 2 White Oak and 2 Burr Oak around the VT Indigenous Heritage Center encampment, Negôni Alnôbaakik (At the Old Indigenous Place").

This act marked the beginning of the Olakwika Alnôbaiwi Botanical Garden. This weekend we will be planting more native edible shrubs, trees and fruits as well as breaking ground on a new demonstration garden as well as planting our garden behind the Intervale Center Barn.

Stay tuned for more updates on our progress!
